2 Timothy 2:15

Why Jesus said 'My God, why have you forsaken me?'

In Matthew 27:46 it says: And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

This is also mentioned in Mark 15:34 which says: And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Now, notice in Psalms 22:1 what it says: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?

And if you read the entire chapter of Psalms 22 you will find that it goes on to describe exatly what happened at the cross while Christ was crucified. Thus, this chapter is a phophecy of what would happen to Christ when he would be cruicified nearly 1000 years before it happened. So, when Jesus cried out 'My God, my God...' He was not asking God why He had forsaken Him? God forbid! He was simply quoting Psalms 22, teaching almost to His very last breath. In John 19:30 the last words of Jesus were: 'It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.' This aligns perfectly with Psalm 22:31 which says: 'They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.' Notice that the last words Jesus said, 'It is finished', is the same as Psalm 22:31 where it says: 'that he hath done this.'

Jesus quoted Psalm 22, proving that this prophecy from nearly 1000 years earlier, by David, had come to pass exactly as it was written.

It is quite commonly taught that God had turned His back on Jesus while he was being crucified because he was taking on all the sins of the world from all mankind, and God, being Holy, cannot look upon that sin. Or something close to that. I ask you, do you really believe that almighty God would turn His back on His only begotten son, Jesus Christ? In additon to that, to think that Jesus would not know that would happen and then cry out to ask His Father why He would forsake Him? As a side note, Jesus knew ahead of time all that was going to happen to Him, as it says in John 18:4. This brings up another point, Jesus never called God, God. He always called God Father! So, given that, if God did turn His back on Jesus, He would have more than likely said 'Father, Father, why have you forsaken me?'
