Purpose of Noahs flood

The flood during Noah’s life time is one of the most familiar stories in the Bible. Most people know that the Bible says that God made it rain for 40 days and nights that flooded the world or at least a region of the world. But how many people know the real, specific reason, God did this? The real reason may be a surprise to most.
So, why did God cause it to rain continuously for 40 days and nights during the days of Noah? According to Genesis 6:5, there was a great deal of evil at that time and God had seen enough and he wanted to rid the Earth of this evil that was out of control which affected every family except for Noah’s (Genesis 6:8,9). So, God instructed Noah to build a boat to very specific specifications for his family and two of every living thing (Genesis 6:14-20) so they could be saved from the soon to come flood.
This begs the question, why was there so much evil that effected so many people that God would feel the need to destroy all of them except for Noah’s family? Let’s look at Genesis chapter 6 which is when this evil was taking place and when God decided to have Noah build the ark.

Genesis 6:1 – And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the Earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2. That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. 3. And the Lord said, “My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.” 4. There were giants in the Earth in those days; and also after that, the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. 5. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the Earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6. And it repented the Lord that He had made man on the Earth, and it grieved Him at His heart. 7. And the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the Earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth Me that I have made them.” 8. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

Let’s examine this. In verse 4 it says, “There were giants in the Earth in those days.” Where did these giants come from? These, “men which were of old, men of renown” is Strong’s #5769 (owlam) which means eternity or always concealed. The primitive root word of #5769 is #5956, which means to veil from sight. This could be taken as they, the fallen angles, were hidden from our ability to see them as they were not in our Earthly abode because they resided in heaven until they chose to come down to seduce women.
Let’s back up to verse 2 where it says, “That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and took them for wives of all which they chose.” What does this mean? Let’s turn to Jude verse 6 for help to clarify who the sons of God were.
Jude 6 – And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

What does this mean that angles took the daughters of men for wives? As we read in Jude verse 6, it declares that there was a fall of some of the angles. What is this fall? It clearly states that the nature of their fall was that they left their own habitation. The word habitation in the Greek Strong’s concordance is #3613 (oiketerion) which means a residence or family. And the word (oiketerion) is from the root word #3624 (oikos), which is a dwelling, like a home. The only other place the word habitation (oiketerion) is used is in 2 Corinthians 5:2 and in both instances it is used of the spiritual body. In other words, these “sons of God” referred to in Genesis 6:2 were spiritual beings, angles from heaven and they took the daughters of men, as in mankind or human flesh, to wife. An interesting note is that in Genesis 6:2 the term “sons of God” is rendered angels in the Septuagint.
Further, the nature of their sin is likened to that of Sodom and Gomorrah as stated in Jude verse 7. It was pure corruption of the flesh and not natural, against God’s natural order of things. The timing of their fall, coming to Earth, is said in 1 Peter 3:20, “in the days of Noah”. This refers to the spirits in prison of which were those that were disobedient during the days of Noah. These spiritual beings are now being held in chains of darkness.

What we have here is that the angels saw the daughters of men and left heaven and came to Earth and took them for wives. And the results of these consummations were offspring that were not normal men but abnormal, they were giants. The word, giants, in the Hebrew Strong’s concordance is #5303 (nefeel), which means a bully or tyrant. The primitive root of this word is #5307 (nawfal) which means to fall or cast down. These were angles from heaven that chose to leave their habitation there and go down to Earth to seduce the women (Jude 6) and bore these freaks of nature.

These beings, the offspring of the angles that mixed with women, were apparently very large, superhuman, abnormal and very wicked. They had to be destroyed to preserve the human race and for God to keep His word of the coming messiah, Genesis 3:15, which had to be born of an uncorrupted, natural, flesh generation. (The Companion Bible, Appendix 23.)
These angles that left their first habitation, heaven, and came directly to Earth without being born innocent of woman, God cast into prison and into chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgment. So, God was so upset with these fallen angels He was willing to hold them in chains until they are judged on judgment day and also destroyed in the flood all of their offspring along with all the families that intermixed with them.

Therefore, the reason for the flood during Noah’s time was to rid the Earth of these giants, the fallen angles, (nephilim), and all those that had intermixed with them to preserve the human race and the blood line of which Christ was to be born. A further argument can be made that the main reason these angles chose to seduce women was to corrupt all of the generations so that Christ could not be born of women and provide salvation to the whole world. It was no doubt one of the many attempts by satan to prevent Christ’s birth.
