Why Jesus asked if the cup could pass from Him
Why did Jesus ask if the cup could be passed away from him? Was he scared of being crucified?
I believe when Christ asked for the cup to be removed He was referring to the cup of persecution of Christians and also the cup of God's wrath referred to in Revelation in the last days.
In Strong's Concordance the word cup is: #4221 - contents therein, lot or fate.
Was Jesus afraid of being crucified? Absolutely not! He knew from the time he was a child that being crucified was in His future and in fact came specifically for that purpose in order to become the ultimate, once for all time sacrifice, for the sins of all mankind.
In all four Gospels Christ refers to this cup prior to His crucifiction.
Matthew 26:39 -And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
Matthew 26:42 - He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
Mark 14:36 - And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
Luke 22:42 - Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
John 18:11 - Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
In Matthew 20:22-23 Christs asks if His desciples can drink of His cup. And they replied that they can. Then He tells them that they will indeed and they were persecuted and some even killed for their standing for Christ.
The cup of God's wrath and punishment:
Revelation 14:9-10 - the cup of God's wrath poured out.
Revelation 16:19 - cup of His wrath.
Revelation 18:4-8 - she shall receive the cup of God's wrath.
Jeremiah 49:12 - thou shalt drink of the cup of punishment.
Isaiah 51:17 - drunk the cup of His fury.
Psalm 11:6 - this shall be the portion of their cup.
Luke 23:28-31 - Weep not for me...for the days will be difficult.
The question of why Jesus asked God if this cup could be taken away from Him may lead one to think that Jesus was afraid of being crucified, what man wouldn't be afraid. But Jesus was no ordinary man and knew from the beginning that He was going to be crucified and did it for us to make a way for all people to have salvation, thus defeating satan once and for all.
